Etowah is an unincorporated community along US 64 about half way between Hendersonville and Brevard.

In 1889, James A. Collins, who operated a store approximately 2 miles north of the current site of Etowah, opened a post office and named it "Money." Because towns at the time were given the names of their post offices, Etowah was originally known as "Money." Later, when the railroad was approved, the owner did not want to name the station "Money," so the name was changed to Etowah at the suggestion of Margaret Gash. Mrs. Gash was the wife of Joseph Gash who donated the land for the railroad and she chose "Etowah" because the Etowah River runs through the part of Georgia where Mrs. Gash's childhood home was located. According to "A Dictionary of Creek/Muskogee" by Jack B. Martin and Margaret McKane Maudlin, the closest translation for "Etowah" is "tribal town."
